The Togolese Republic is located in West Africa and has a population of 6.7 million. It's estimated that 69% of the people live on less than $2 (USD) a day! The tremendous success of the ABWE hospital shows the poverty in Togo.
French is the official language, although there are 37 tribes and each has its own language. We will learn French and Ewe[eh-vay], the tribal language of the people with whom we will mainly work.
Major religious groups include indigenous religions, Islam in the north, and Catholicism. It's estimated that over 90% of the population, including Christians, still engage in some form of fetish practice. This may involve voodoo curses, worshiping of ancestors, or superstitious practices.
We are given to Togo as Ephesians 4:12 says, "for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edification of the body of Christ." Our goal is to build up churches by means of pastoral and teacher training.
Many churches are without pastors and there are many pastors who have only minimal theological training. We want to train them theologically and encourage them in their church planting and evangelism.
The teacher training school for the Christian Schools has graduated over 90 elementary teachers and these teachers are reaching over 2,000 children a year with the gospel. These children are the next generation of believers in Togo! We will train additional teachers and provide the schools with Christian curriculum.
